Joining happens from a device, after installing ZeroTier One. You can join your own networks and other people's networks.

macOS and Windows

On macOS and Windows, find the ZeroTier app in your menu bar. Launch the ZeroTier One app bundle if it's not already running. Click the ⏁ icon on your menu bar and select 'Join New Network'.

Type or paste in your network ID and hit 'Join Network'

From the Command Line

From the command line simply type zerotier-cli join ################ with ############### being the 16-digit network ID of the network you wish to join.

On UNIX based OSes, this requires sudo. On Windows, this requires an administrator command prompt.

Create a Network

A ZeroTier network is essentially a secure Local Area Network (LAN) that you can use anywhere in the world. Let's make one and connect two devices over ZeroTier.

We'll use ping to test the connection. Any two devices that can run ZeroTier will do: laptop, phone, virtual machine, etc…

Both devices can be at the same location, on the same physical network. If you move one to a cafe or to your office, it should still just work.

The rough outline is:

Create a ZeroTier network
Join the network from two devices
ping one device from the other over the ZeroTier network

This should take about 5 minutes.

Each zerotier network you join creates a network interface on your device. It's like adding another Ethernet port to your computer.

Ping is not working

First, make sure your device is authorized on the network and you're using the ZeroTier assigned Managed IP address. Aside from that, some OSes block pings in their local firewall by default.

Windows Firewall

ZeroTier versions 1.10.3 and greater automatically enable ping on ZeroTier adapters.

macOS Firewall

The firewall is not enabled by default on macOS, and thus pings will not be blocked by default. If your firewall is enabled on macOS, go into System Preferences -> Security & Privacy. Under Firewall Options, ensure "Enable stealth mode" is disabled. Stealth mode blocks pings.

Linux Firewalls

There are far too many Linux distributions out there to list instructions for all of them here. Please refer to your distribution's documentation for how to unblock ICMP packets.

We're going to use curl to set up an example ZeroTier network. An easy way to get curl in Windows is to install the latest version of Git, which comes with bash, curl, and other tools.

OpenAPI

The setup described here uses the local ZeroTierOne service API to provision and manage networks. You can browse the OpenAPI docs for the local controller API for more detail on this interface.

This is a low tech way to setup a controller for example purposes. You'd likely build yourself something fancier around this API.

Authtoken

You'll need to find the current local auth token on your system using the instructions in the API Tokens guide.

Get your Node ID

Network IDs are based on the Node ID of the Controller. Controllers are nodes! When you join a network, your node finds the controller like it does with other nodes: by its Node ID.

Minimum System Requirements

ZeroTier is lightweight, portable, and compatible across all major platforms and architectures. It typically consumes less than 16 MB of memory, only about 1 MB of storage, and even has a low-bandwidth mode for IoT applications. It supports 32-bit ARM (arm32), 64-bit ARM (arm64), 32-bit Intel (x86), 64-bit Intel (x64/amd64), MIPS, and s390x. You can run it on Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS/iPadOS, Android, and FreeBSD. You can run it on Routers, Network Attached Storage, and we have solutions for when you can't install ZeroTier on a small IoT sensor.

Our most recent client can still be run on tiny single-board computers like the original Raspberry Pi made over a decade ago and all versions of ZeroTier are backwards compatible.
ZeroTier is currently single-threaded so devices with more than two cores typically will not offer significant performance gains. Future versions of ZeroTier will introduce multithreading.
While ZeroTier will operate on very low-power hardware (e.g. a single core 32-Bit ARM running at 600Mhz without AES hardware acceleration (AES-NI)), its performance will suffer.

We recommend the following for a happy ZeroTier experience: >=1GHz CPU with at least 2 core
